The Hamburg Institute for Social Research (HIS) is characterised by a great thematic openness and a distinct range of services for the interested public. Research forms the core of the Institute’s work. It relies on dialogue and cooperation, especially between the humanities and social sciences, and is thus not limited to one academic discipline.
The Max Weber Foundation – German Humanities Institutes Abroad promotes research with a focus on the fields of history, cultural studies, economics and social sciences in selected countries and thus promotes mutual understanding. It currently maintains eleven institutes worldwide as well as other research groups and offices. With its infrastructures, the MWS offers the best conditions for excellent research in the humanities and social sciences, which comes about through direct proximity to the research subjects and in the exchange of different perspectives and approaches.
The German Historical Institute Rome, founded in 1888, is the oldest German historical institute abroad. It is dedicated to historical and music-historical research from the early Middle Ages to the recent past, with a focus on Italy, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. As part of a dense network of cooperations, the DHI Rome sees itself as a bridge between different academic cultures, especially between Germany and Italy, and as a forum for international academic exchange. The Institute sees the promotion of young German and international academics and the academic advising of researchers as essential tasks.
The German Historical Institute London is part of the Max Weber Foundation. Thanks to its diverse contributions to the history of Great Britain, the history of the British Empire and Commonwealth, the history of German-British relations and comparative European history, the DHI London is firmly anchored in the academic landscape of both countries. It is the centre for German history in Great Britain and the contact point for German historians working in British archives and libraries.
The task of the German Historical Institute Warsaw is the academic research of the history of Poland and German-Polish relations in a European and international context. In this thematic field, the Institute conducts innovative basic research that focuses on Polish history in its European contexts and the history of German-Polish relations in their entire chronological depth and thematic breadth.

Das Deutsche Historische Institut London gehört zur Max Weber Stiftung. Dank seiner vielfältigen Beiträge zur Geschichte Großbritanniens, zur Geschichte des Britischen Empires und Commonwealth, zur Geschichte des deutschbritischen Verhältnisses sowie zur vergleichenden europäischen Geschichte ist das DHI London fest in der akademischen Landschaft der beiden Länder verankert. Es ist Zentrum für deutsche Geschichte in Großbritannien und Anlaufstelle für deutsche Historikerinnen und Historiker, die in britischen Archiven und Bibliotheken arbeiten.
Das Deutsche Historische Institut in Rom, gegründet 1888, ist das älteste historische Auslandsinstitut der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Es widmet sich historischer und musikgeschichtlicher Forschung vom Frühmittelalter bis in die jüngste Vergangenheit mit Schwerpunkten auf Italien, Südeuropa und dem Mittelmeerraum. Als Teil eines dichten Netzes von Kooperationen versteht sich das DHI Rom als Brücke zwischen verschiedenen akademischen Kulturen, insbesondere zwischen Deutschland und Italien, und als Forum für den internationalen akademischen Austausch. Als wesentliche Aufgaben sieht das Institut die Förderung des deutschen und intenationalen wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses.
Aufgabe des Deutschen Historischen Instituts Warschau ist die wissenschaftliche Erforschung der Geschichte Polens und der deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen im europäischen und internationalen Kontext. In diesem Themenfeld betreibt das Institut innovative Grundlagenforschung, die die polnische Geschichte in ihren europäischen Bezügen und die deutsch-polnische Beziehungsgeschichte grundsätzlich in ihrer gesamten chronologischen Tiefe und thematischen Breite in den Blick nimmt.
